Hand-Made Prints

We make superb giclée prints, to fine art standards. Each print is made by hand, with obsessive attention to detail. We use a fully ICC-calibrated worfklow, printing on our wide format Canon Pro 4000, using roll paper up to 44 inches wide.

Ink
we use only genuine Canon professional pigment ink. This inkset is preferred by many fine art printers, collectors and curators, not only because of its faithful and vivid colours and its superb monochrome output, but also because of its longevity.

Paper
For fine art printing for artists our default medium is cotton rag paper. We can print on pretty much any available paper, and some artists have preferences (such as etching-type papers, some of which have a strong "tooth"). Our preference is for Fotospeed or Hahnemuhle papers. We will discuss paper choices with you, and give advice if you require it.

Printing

Fine art printing is not about pressing a button on a keyboard. It requires highly-practised skills and years of experience, including knowledge of colour management (our workflow is fully ICC colour calibrated, including monitors and printers - we make our own software profile for each printer/paper combination), sharpening (all digital/digitised images require sharpening, but it has to be exactly the right amount applied at either two or three separate stages depending upon the image) and soft proofing (monitors, even when properly calibrated, are lit from behind, whereas a print is not; soft proofing allows us to view the output image through the printer profile, to see what it will look like on the chosen paper).

There is a difference between printing for artists and printing for photographers. Artists usually want their giclée prints to look as close as possible to the original artwork, whereas with photographers there is a large element of artistic interpretation. Often for fine art photography prints we use luminosity masking techniques in Photoshop to ensure that the quality of light in the print best exhibits the luminosity of the image. We understand all this stuff so that you don't have to! Some photographers already know exactly what they want and have soft proofed the image using our print profiles. In other cases we are very happy to advise you on the best printing treatment of your artwork - or, if you prefer, we will just use our experience and discretion.
